Snips and Cuts

On these pages we hope to bring you up to date on our classmates in both photographs and stories.

Leslie Connell, Caralisa Connell and Mickey Connell at the University of Louisville Kentucky's softball field.

Caralisa Connell, the granddaughter of Leslie and Mickey Connell, just completed her freshman year at the University of Louisville on a softball scholarship and had a supurb year. She broke several Louisville records in her first year playing for the Cards and most came while she suffered a stress fracture in her pitching forearm. She had a streak of winning 12 straight games while pitching every inning in the streak (both of the other two pitchers were out with injuries). She broke the record for the number of wins recorded for a freshman pitcher with 20 wins on the season. She broke the record for striking out the most batters by a freshman pitcher. She was the first freshman to pitch a shutout game in a post season NCAA Regional Championship game. Caralisa was also named to the second Big East Conference team.

Caralisa is a physis major and even though she just finished her first year of studies at Louisville, she begins her junior year in August!

David Dennis was an active participant in the Macon County Senior Games this month. His poem "Ode To the Blue Ridge Mountains" won the gold medal for poetry in the Senior Arts competition. His performance of his original song,"The Hero," won the silver medal in the Senior Follies. At the Follies, his quartet, called Seniority, also performed "The Star-Spangled Banner" to open the show and the Beetles' "Yesterday" during the show. For those who may remember him from high school as having black wavy hair, he is the second guy from the left in the two pictures.

Hi Mickey,

Last weekend my wife Sandra (CHS 58) and I sang with three of our friends in the Silver Arts Follies in our home town of Franklin, NC. We came in 2nd and won the silver medal. I have attached a picture of us with our medals. Sandra and I are on the left. We call our group "The Grace Notes." We sang a five part a cappella piece entitled "Ride the Morning Wind." We'll be shooting for the gold medal next year!! Hope that all is well with you.

FOUND LOST CLASSMATE

Michael Thomas McManus

Doug House informed me of finding one of our very few classmates that we were not able to find in our search before our reunion. Doug sent me the following email on the discovery:

"During our luncheon on Saturday, a call came to Jimmies for anyone at the luncheon. I took the call and it was from Mike. I think he had stumbled onto chs57.com and knew we were having the luncheon. I took some info from him and called him later Saturday evening. I told him that we had been searching for him for the past 3 years and also told him about the reunion and the 70th birthday party. Apparently his former boss and his former fellow employees with whom I had spoken, never told him that we were searching for him. He is living in a senior center in eastern NC and appears to be in good health. I asked him to monitor chs57.com to keep updated about news related to the class. He has my email addr and my phone number and he said that he would keep in touch."

Glad we have found you Mike!

Here is a photo of Mike working in a key shop prior to his retirement.

What a lady.....errrr Doctor
Barbara Snyder Hawkins in 1957 and even lovelier today.

Barbara Snyder Hawkins was the first woman to graduate from N.C.State in chemical engineering. During her eight years with Martin-Marietta in aerophysics research she also did graduate work at John Hopkins, obtaining her master’s degree in applied mathematics. She then goes and gets exposed to clinical trials, which becomes the focus of her career, while working in the School of Medicine at the University of Maryland in Baltimore. Still not completely satisfied, she samples a few more departments at John Hopkins in the fields of mathematic statistics, mathematics and biostatics.

This is already a career to most of us but not Barbara. As a result of the clinical trial work, she then settled down to doctoral research at the School of Public Health, Department of Epidemiology. She must have done a great job as they brought her into the faculty of their Department of Epidemiology where she is still employed.

The great news, after nine years of directing clinical trials in the Biometry Division, John Hopkins promoted her to Professor of Opthalmology. What an honor. In the 100 year history of the John Hopkins School of Medicine, Barbara became only the 34th woman to be promoted to a Professor!

Still not enough, after receiving her Doctorial degree she began studying music at the Peabody of Music, focusing on piano.

What a brilliant lady! Barbara we are proud of you!

Does this look like a lady that had a child at the age of 39?!
